No glider ever spawns on the map. There is no airfield with one parked on it and no crate that contains one. Every glider in the air over Chernarus was built by somebody out of loot, on the spot where you saw it take off.
Where the recipe comes from: nowhere. There is no blueprint to find, nothing to learn, nothing to unlock. Every character can do this from the moment they spawn — the recipe is the combination itself. What takes time is the shopping.
The full shopping list
This is the total, including the two items that go into the kit. Gather all of it before you start; a half-built stand standing in the open is a stand somebody else finishes.
| Item | How many | Goes in | Where you find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pipe | 6 | 1 into the kit, 5 into the stand | Industrial. The single most common thing on this list. |
| Rope | 2 | 1 into the kit, 1 into the stand | Industrial and farms. |
| Metal Wire | 2 | Stand, two slots | Industrial and farms. Also crafted from Barbed Wire with Pliers. |
| Tarp | 1 full one | Stand, one slot | Industrial and farms. It has to be a whole tarp — a part-used one will not pay the slot. |
| Duct Tape | 2 full rolls | Stand, two slots | Industrial, farms, towns and villages. Both rolls must read 100%. |
| Nails | 70 | Stand, one slot | Out of a Nail Box — industrial and farms. The build takes seventy off the stack and gives the rest back. |
| Sheet metal | 2 | Stand, one slot | Industrial. Two off a Metal Plate stack, not two separate items. |
| Pipe Wrench | 1 | Your hands | Industrial, farms, funfairs. It is a tool and it is not used up — the same wrench builds, folds and mounts every glider you will ever own. |
| Car wheels | 4 | On the finished machine | Industrial, and off cars. Any civilian car wheel fits — see fittings. |
Nothing here is an event spawn and nothing has to be raided for. Every material on the list is ordinary loot that is on the map right now. The cost of a glider is not rarity, it is the number of different things you have to be carrying at the same time.
The four steps
-
Lash the kit: Pipe + Rope
In the crafting menu, put a Pipe and a Rope together and hold the action. Eight seconds later you are holding a Glider build kit — a trestle of tube on a rope, the thing you aim at the ground.
-
Put it down where the machine should stand
Take the kit in your hands and raise the placement ghost. The ghost is the glider itself, not the kit: what you are aiming is ten metres of wing, and you get to see whether it fits between those trees before you spend an evening of materials on finding out.
Ten seconds to set it down. It has to be outdoors — the stand would fit in a barn, the machine it becomes would not.
-
Feed the stand
The stand is Glider under construction, and its attachment panel is the shopping list: thirteen named, empty slots in two groups. Drag the materials in the way you load a fence. What is still missing is whatever square is still grey.
-
Finish it with the wrench
Pipe Wrench in your hands, look at the stand, hold Build glider. Thirty seconds. The stand becomes the machine, standing exactly where the stand stood and pointing the way it pointed.
The stand, and the rules it plays by
The thirteen slots are split into two groups in the panel, so you can see at a glance which half of the machine you are short of.
| Group | Slots | What goes in |
|---|---|---|
| Airframe | 9 | 5 × Pipe, 2 × Metal Wire, Nails ×70, sheet metal ×2 |
| Sail and rigging | 4 | 1 × Tarp (full), 2 × Duct Tape (full rolls), 1 × Rope |
- The prompt does not appear until it is paid for. DayZ has no greyed-out action, so Build glider is simply not offered while anything is missing. That is not a bug; it is the same way vanilla base building behaves. The empty squares are the checklist.
- Ruined material is refused. A wing spar with nothing left in it is the one part of this machine nobody finds out about until they are in the air.
- Your change comes back. The build takes exactly what the recipe costs. Feed it a stack of ninety-nine nails and twenty-nine of them are yours afterwards.
- The stand cannot be picked up. A trestle with six pipes in it that somebody can carry off is somebody else's evening in a backpack.
Putting it in the wrong place is not fatal
Same wrench, ten seconds: Take the stand apart. Everything in the slots goes on the ground where you can see it, and the kit comes back into the world. Do that whenever the spot turns out to be wrong — too tight, too visible, too far from a road to roll out on.
What you have when the timer stops
A machine, and nothing bolted to it. This is deliberate: everything that can be bolted on can also be stolen, broken and replaced, and none of it needs the stand again.
Ready straight away
Both seats, both luggage racks, the three instrument boards, the sail and the whole airframe. You can sit in it the second it exists.
Still to find
Four car wheels — it will not roll, and therefore will not take off, without all four. A power generator with a spark plug if you want an engine, and petrol to put in it.
There is no way to un-build a finished glider back into materials. The way to change your mind is the bag: 20 seconds with the wrench folds the whole machine into a 90 kg bundle you carry away in both hands. See folding and carrying it.
